What is the experience of hypnosis like?

Hypnosis is generally experienced as restful and relaxing. It is different from sleep. You are aware of your surroundings, hearing sounds, smelling smells, being aware of movements and in control of your actions. Consciousness becomes more selective and you are usually more aware of internal processes than outside activities and distractions. In this altered state, you are able to select what you want to be aware of, allowing yourself to concentrate on solving a problem or just enjoying the relaxation.

Do we experience trance-like states naturally?

Yes. This is actually a normal and natural state of mind. We all experience this state, for example when we daydream. It gives us the ability to focus on our thoughts.

How is hypnosis useful?

Hypnosis enables us to use subconscious resources for changing our behaviour. It enables us to more easily welcome new ideas and it encourages greater mental flexibility. This can give different perspectives on problems and make us more adaptable in changing circumstances.
